Large Area Rugs vs. Carpeting: Which Should you Choose?

Carpeting and large area rugs are both able to add a little warmth and color to uncovered floors, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy to choose between the two. Fortunately, we’ve been providing carpets and repairing rugs for decades around Wheaton, Naperville and Lisle, so we’ve got plenty of advice to offer.

The Pros and Cons of Large Area Rugs

Most advantages revolve around the fact that rugs aren’t fixed to one place. You can clean them more easily, and the airflow beneath them can help prevent mold. Being able to switch up rugs without tearing up the floor lets you change the character of a room in a flash, especially since rugs tend to come in bolder colors and more unique styles than carpeting. You’ll also want to think about rugs if you have a very attractive underfloor — you might not want to show off bare concrete, but polished wood is beautiful when combined with a large area rug.

That said, rugs can slip as you walk across them or present edges to trip on, and they only provide insulation across a certain section of your flooring. While a quality rug pad can prevent slippage, it’s just another consideration to take into account.

The Pros and Cons of Carpeting

Carpeting is far more common than the use of large area rugs, and that’s no coincidence. Since they are fixed to the floor, they are slip- and trip-resistant, and cushioned padding can be fitted underneath to reduce heat-loss and sound transmission even further. There won’t be any uncovered areas, and the more neutral colors and styles of carpets are often preferable, especially if you want to unify the appearance of many rooms on the same floor.

However, carpeting is generally costlier to buy and clean than large area rugs. Installation will take more time, and carpeting is subject to getting worn down in high-traffic areas.
